Greta Gerell showed a passion for art from an early age. At 15, she became the youngest student accepted to Althin’s Painting School, and by 17 she had entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, a year before the official age limit. Her travels after graduation (especially in France) shaped her artistic identity, bringing Impressionist color and early Cubist influences into her work. During this period, she also befriended leading artists such as Picasso, Braque and Juan Gris.
In the 1960s, exhibitions in Copenhagen, Oslo, Paris, London, and Baghdad established her international reputation and in 1967, she founded the Greta Gerell Foundation, dedicating her art and fortune to supporting educational programs and student scholarships.
Her work continues to be shown today, keeping her legacy alive.
A note on vintage & antique art & frames: our paintings often bear some marks from the passage of time and can be beautifully faded. Frames can be weathered, chipped and cracked. We see this as an advantage and hope you will too. Please study the photos carefully.
