Walther Illner first attended the School of Arts and Crafts in Leipzig and trained as a lithographer. He settled in Munich and attended the Academy of Fine Arts, later completing his education at the Academy in Dresden. He spent time in the Dachau artists' colony and became a member of the Munich Artists' Cooperative. In 1913 he was appointed professor in Darmstadt and worked in the vicinity of the Darmstadt artists' colony. In the 1920s and 30s he spent time in the Netherlands, where he painted flowers.
