Original antique oil painting by an unknown artist. Continental School, probably Italian, c.1680-1720

Oil on canvas, framed size 25 x 29 cm

Painted by an unknown hand, this beautifully observed head study is thought to date from the late 17th or early 18th century. Her lifted gaze suggests quiet contemplation or devotion, perhaps a saint, an allegorical figure or an imagined beauty, but her identity has long since been lost to time.

The soft modelling of the face, restrained palette and dark background are characteristic of the Continental Baroque tradition and hint at an Italian influence. It is also possible that the painting is a fragment from a larger devotional composition, later cut down to preserve this remarkable fragment.

The painting has been relined and re-stretched during the 20th century and is presented in a beautifully carved and gilded antique wood frame, probably dating from the 18th century.

A note on the antique frame: this bears signs of historic woodworm, which has been treated. Our paintings often bear some marks from the passage of time and can be beautifully faded. Frames can be weathered, chipped and cracked. We see this as an advantage and hope you will too. Please study the photos carefully.
